Meet the committee

Women in Business is managed by an executive committee of Chair, Vice Chair and Treasurer, along with a number of support roles, totaling 12 members. The organisation is governed by way of the ‘Women In Business Constitution’ which the committee has agreed to abide by.

The committee is there to take responsibility for all aspects of running and governing the organisation. The committee meets monthly and the Annual General Meeting (AGM) is held every December. During the AGM, members are invited to stand for election to the committee and current committee members can be re-elected.

Chair
I’m the co-owner and director of Pool Heat Ltd, which supplies and maintains swimming pool environmental control systems throughout the UK. This is our 15th year in business. We work with commercial and private pool owners, local authorities and swimming pool installers. I manage the day-to-day running of the business, liaising with customers, suppliers and pool contractors. I have an honours degree in architecture and have worked in the building construction industry for over 30 years. My experience includes private practice, council, freelance, not-for-profit, private developer and self-build. Currently I am renovating a chapel! Clearly, I love a challenge, business, bricks and people. This is my third year as Chair, having joined 10 years ago. I have met so many kind and inspiring people over the years through WIB and I feel incredibly lucky to be in business in Hull and part of such a friendly, genuine and supportive network.

Vice Chair and Past Chair (2017)
I’m a solicitor and I have been qualified for over 20 years.  I have been a partner at Bridge McFarland LLP for 8 years and I head the Employment department.  I help businesses, charities, employees and directors with their employment law issues.  The most enjoyable part of my job is translating what can often be a complex area of law into pragmatic and reassuring advice and support.  I’m not great at blowing my own trumpet, but I‘ve been described by clients in legal industry guides as providing “excellent, sensible, realistic and timely advice”.  I also regularly present at training events. I have been a member of Women in Business for around 8 years, and I was the Chair in 2017.  I’m currently the Vice Chair.  Like many of my fellow members, the best part of Women in Business for me is the mixture of training and social events we offer, and the way that it helps to build not only potential business connections but also genuine friendships and a support network of like-minded women.

I trained as a nurse qualifying in 1981 and worked both in the NHS and the private sector in senior nursing positions for many years. I then completed an MBA before becoming Hospital Director at a private hospital and latterly becoming a National Operations Director for a private hospital chain, where I specialised in business margin improvement, process improvement/re-engineering and clinical quality standards. I now work as an independent consultant advising small businesses on managing processes and margin and quality improvement. I joined Women in Business in the second year of its existence and have been a member ever since, serving on the committee and chairing the organisation on two occasions. I am also a judge for the Women in Business, Women of Achievement Awards, a position that I am immensely proud of, and I am constantly humbled by the amazing business talent and passion we have in this region. I remain enthusiastic about the Women in Business organisation, our ability as an organisation to provide support for our members, networking opportunities and the chance to make life-long friendships.

GDPR Support
Like so many women, I have many roles in life, juggling personal and work, with the most important ones being a mother and wife and these are also the most satisfying! I have my own company, Data Protection Solutions. I’m probably one of the few people who is passionate about GDPR! Firstly I enjoy helping people, I always have and I support any size of business to demystify the complexities of Data Protection. The topic is vast and forever changing, so helping my clients, locally and nationally, in finding gaps in their GDPR compliance and supporting them is a job I love! I appear in the HEY Humber Growth Start Up Programme webinars, talking about GDPR basics and have gained the nickname of GDPR Nanny McPhee "When you need me, but do not want me, then I must stay. When you want me, but no longer need me, then I have to go." I joined the Women In Business Committee in December 2019. The interaction, support, organisation and ideas of my colleagues shows how proactive WIB is. There are great events to attend and interesting people to meet with the Women of Achievements awards being a highlight in the calendar.

I'm a journalist and former television reporter and planning producer with over 30 years of experience in the media industry.  I have been running my own PR consultancy since 2008.  I also teach business owners how to do their own PR and get themselves in the media either by following my self-study online course, DIY Your Biz PR, or joining my PR Bootcamp with Fiona Dwyer – an 8-week Live group programme.  Although I have been a Women in Business member since 2009, I am new to the committee, having joined in December 2021. I love the mix of training and social events we offer, so I will be using my expertise to raise the profile and spread the word about Women in Business.  I am also the compere for the Women of Achievements Awards ceremony, organised by WIB and one of the most prestigious events of its kind in our region.

I have my mum to blame for the start of Elliegantly Made when, in 2012 she handed to me a cake decorating magazine.  From that, I tried various recipes and techniques and soon realised I not only had a natural flair but also a passion for producing cakes and bakes. I am a small independent business which has been built from the ground and has subsequently grown from strength to strength with my award winning cakes travelling the length and breadth of the country. In 2021 we incorporated EMHQ, a fully functional dedicated kitchen with usable and purpose built space adjacent to our family kitchen. I joined Women in Business in December 20 and became a committee member a year later, helping with the social media aspect of the group.  I’d urge anyone thinking of joining WIB to give it a try, we not only have wonderful social events but also extremely useful and informative training events. The members are so supportive, friendly and interactive it’s a pleasure to be part of this group.

Committee Member & Past Chair (2013)
I have been a member of Women in Business since 1995, and I have been lucky enough to have seen many of our members join our group and flourish in their chosen fields.   I feel honoured to have met and worked alongside many inspirational women on our Committee.  I’m a former Financial Adviser, and I now run my own ladieswear personal shopping business from my home.  Having done this for ten years, I am proud to have dressed many of our members and their friends with my range of French Designer Clothes (Captain Tortue).  I accepted the honour to be Chair of Women in Business in 2013 because I genuinely believe that Women in Business exists to share our business connections in a friendly and supportive way whilst enjoying great social meetings and informative training events. I look forward to meeting you and many more years of our vibrant and fun organisation.
